Google bots travel through your website with the help of links within your site that point to a new page. So if there are pages that are standalone with no pointing links, then it might not be possible for crawl bots to find that page.
So due to this particular reason, webmasters build there Sitemaps.
Do i need to make a Sitemap?
This is the question that most of us should ask our selves. Sitemaps are usually for those websites that are not update quite frequently. When you make a Sitemap.xml file (with the help of online sitemap generators that i will mention later in the post) you tell Google that OK, this is what my site all about. So if you update your site regularly, like as we do in "Blogs" there is not much use to submit a Sitemap.xml file to Google webmaster tools.
Would you be submitting it daily after posting like 3-4 articles daily? That's that point.
Alternative to Sitemap.xml ?
See, all we want from a Sitemap is that Google should know about each of our webpages so that we get traffic from each of them. Right? When we post here on BloggingeHow.com™, our article gets into Google after couple of minutes.
That is, Google crawl's this blog so regularly. So the point is, that if you would update your blog on regular basis (even like, once in a week) your post would automatically get into Google without submitting any Sitemaps.
But yeah, if you got a static website (that is not updated much), then you should submit one to Google Webmaster tools with the help of following steps.
How to Submit a Sitemap.xml ?
You can make one for your self at XML-Sitemaps.
Note: Once the Sitemap is made, download Sitemap.xml file if you can upload this file to your website root directory, else if you are on Blogger than download Sitemap.html. (The reason and method for uploading is discussed below)
>>Go to webmaster tools
>>Add the URL
Now that you have entered your web address, you need to verify that this particular site belongs to you. So for that you need to either upload a file to your site root folder, or if you are on Blogger, you can add meta tag below <head> tag.
You will get these options once you have entered the web address in previous step. The new page would be called "Verify Ownership".
Once you have uploaded the file, or added meta tag (this option is in "alternative methods" tab) click the verify link and your site would be added.
Now upload the Sitemap.xml file to your website root folder. Copy the web address of Sitemap and save it somewhere (may be in notepad. We will use it later). Now click your verified website link in webmaster tools and you will land on dashboard page. On the left bottom there would be a link for submitting sitemap. Click that.
Now paste the sitemap link that you saved before in the popup url bar that appeared. That's all for websites which can upload sitemap.xml file to their root directory. Your Sitemap has been Submitted. Enjoy.
>>For Blogger Users
As we can't upload Sitemap.xml file to Blogger, we will make a Sitemap.html file instead of Sitemap.xml. The website that i mentioned above have many options for creating a sitemap. Once its done making sitemap, scroll down the page and you would see "Download Sitemap" options as shown in the picture.
Download the Sitemap.html and open the file in brower. Copy all the links.
Now go to Blogger >> Posting >> Edit Pages >> New Page and paste all the links in that page. Now publish the page. You may name the page "Sitemap"
Now go back to webmaster tools and click submit a Sitemap. Now paste the link of the new page you created on your blog with all those links. That's all!
That was lengthy post. Wuff! I wanted to make it a comprehensive one so that it helps all the users, whether from Blogger or any other websites. Hope that helped. But again i would say, do consider the fact that you don't need to submit a sitemap if you own a blog that is updated frequently as i mentioned above in the post.
