Though you wont be monetizing you're blog in the starting, as there is no use, BUT you should keep in mind the ad spots places that you would later offer at your blog.

People now days like to use the Skyscraper banner (728*90) along their blog logos. This spot has pretty high CTR (click through rates) and thus increases revenue.

Tip #3 One Sidebar Is Enough

Make sure that you're blog has one sidebar, and NOT two. Though it doesn't matter how many sidebars you have, but giving out space for the body (content) part gives the blog clean look and encourages readers to stay for a longer period of time.

Also, as what i have noticed, many people and top companies blogs, uses sidebar on the right. As this particular layout is becoming a standard for blogs, people are getting used to it. So its better not to force them to adjust to different conditions.

Tip #4 Elegant Footer

Have a footer for your blog, gives it a professional look. On average, people like to use 3-6 column footer designs for their blog. It depends upon the overall width of your blog. The wider it is, the better.

Tip #5 Light Background

SO IMPORTANT. Never choose a template that has a dark background (specially at the text area). The readers get frustrated and leave the blog in seconds. You DON'T want that to happen. Make sure that the text background is white.

Tip #6 The 'Right' Text Size

In my experience, using the 12-13px font size works great. The bigger text with light background makes the reading conditions favourable for the reader. Thus encourages him to read more and more.

Tip #8 Home Page Layout

Most people like to display 10 recent blog posts on their blog's homepage. It would be even better if you're template has a 'Featured' post section where the top posts could be displayed for even further publicity.

Tip #9 Below Post Layout

This is pretty important too. The area just after the blog posts (post pages) is dedicated to 'call to action'. What that mean is that this is when the reader has those few seconds to take decision for his next action. Whether he would leave the blog, or would continue reading some other linked post, or simply subscribe to your blog.

I would recommend that you should put Social Media Sharing widgets like Facebook Like Box , Facebook Like Button or Google+ buttons etc.

You could also add an email subscription box to increase your blogs email list for affiliate marketing later in your blogging career.

Make sure that you have installed the post sharing buttons in your template, if they aren't already in the one that you would choose. The more the readers would share your content in social media, the faster your blog would grow.
