5 Ways to Improve Your Boring Blog

boring blogAvid followers of the blogosphere at large can likely agree that there is almost nothing worse than a boring blog (except maybe one that is often out of service). In fact, boredom is tantamount to death in blogging culture, where you have about five seconds to grab the attention of readers.

If you fail to engage visitors immediately they won't come back to see if you've improved later on; they'll simply move on to the next site. So if your blog is under performing and the feedback indicates that the milquetoast writing is to blame, here are a few ways to spice things up.

Before starting off, you may like to read:

1. Get up close and personal.

You know what makes your blog truly unique? You. Regardless of the bent of your blog, there are probably thousands (or even millions) of others out there touting the same line. What sets you apart from your competition is your personality, so don't be afraid to show it! Perez Hilton is a prime example.

He could have been just another celebrity news hack like so many other paparazzi. But he injected his one-of-a-kind cattiness and flair into his site and made it one of the hottest celebrity gossip blogs on the web. And all he had to do was be himself.

2. Sensationalize (a bit).

You don't want to talk AT your readers, even if you're an authority on the subject matter. You need to start a conversation if you want people to truly engage with the content, and this means writing with an eye towards talking WITH your readers. Sometimes the best way to do that is to present hot-button issues, sensationalize stories, or ask the burning questions that people can't help but answer.

So present whatever information you want, but do it in a way that encourages readers to become involved and get passionate on their end. A little controversy isn't always a bad thing, especially if your boring blog is on the decline and you need a boost; just don't go over the edge and scare people away.

3. Love your subject.

If you chose the topic of your blog on a whim or you used Google analytics to select a subject that you thought would be popular, you've made a horrible mistake. Even the best writer will have trouble mustering aplomb for subject that he isn't interested in. If you want to take a blog from dull to dazzling you need to display a passion for the subject matter.

So it really behooves you to settle on a topic that holds some measure of appeal to you personally. When you are invested in your area of coverage you won't have to work as hard to engage yourself and your readership.

4. Learn every day.

Perhaps your problem is that you're stuck in your own head, going over the same stuff. Without some input from other sources this situation isn't going to improve. So partake of other types of media, from news programs to movies, music, books, and of course, other blogs.

You don't have to swipe ideas from unsuspecting competitors, but taking it all in could trigger some new ideas for your own blog, even if the subjects you're perusing are unrelated.

5. Go for Guest posts.

No matter how much you love your topic, eventually you're going to run out of things to say. This is where a fresh perspective can help. And if you can't pay for writers, simply try guest posting on for size. Allowing others to write for your blog can infuse your content with new life, and you'll help aspiring writers in the process.

In short, it's beneficial to the entire online community (but mostly it's a good bet for spicing up your boring blog).
