Top 10 Countries without Military Forces

Living in an era where warfare seems nothing more then a game, military seems to be imperative formula for a nation’s defense. As the British classical scholar F.E.Adcock says “Battles and wars are nearly always won by soldiers and sergeants” which although stands as an inevitable fact, however, to people’s surprise, there are countries void of military.

For the many who believe that military is a mandatory binding force, below is the list of ten such countries that have no set of military regiments, for reasons concerning either its location or the country’s history itself. However there always lies a backup plan to handle the situation in case of any undesirable attack or if an unexpected war is declared upon.


10) Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands is an amalgamation of thousands of small islands. Back in 1893 , the British army became the country’s protectorate and the Solomon islands themselves never had a properly established military force.

During WWII they had the British support but constituted their own government from 1976-1998.

From 1998-2006, the country struggled with civil disagreements, crimes and ethnic conflicts within the government which were attempted to resolve by Australia and Newzealand who eventually disarmed. To date the country has a Solomon Island Police Force but no separate military unit.

Then who guards Solomon Islands ?


Although from time to time , the country ask for help from Australia in terms of military arms. So in case of any unwanted attack, Australia will probably the primary source of help.

9) Costa Rica


Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s military force was dismissed as a result of a huge civil war that killed a couple of thousand people in the country. The legislation for the dismissal of army was signed on Decemeber 1, 1948, by Jose Figueres who was the acting president at that time.

To completely abolish the military from the country, president himself was able to break the wall of Cuartel Bellavista, which was once an army headquarters in the country.

 Now the country has Fuerza Publica which provides lay enforcement, ground security and other important duties acted upon by the police force.

Then who protects Costa Rica?


However , the country was immensely gratified by the inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance of 1947, according to which , Costa Rica can call for military assistance from 21 different nations including the mighty U.S and Chile.

8) Somoa



Samoa Location

To date , Samoa is void of a military regiment to handle any case of war-like situation. Though the country has an acting Police Force but it cannot be matched to the grounds of a proper military setup. In case of war-fare, Samoa will have to rely on its friendships with the neighbour land or outside countries.



Then who protects Somoa?


Samoa has a friendship treaty signed with the Newzealand in 1962, according to which they can call NewZealand for military assistance in events following a foreign invasion or a war.


7) Palau



Palau has a National Police Force which takes care of the protection of the civilians and attend to any civil unrest in the larger community within the country.

Then who guards Palau?


A Compact by the name of Free Accociation, in 1983 , made U.S the protectorate of Palau according to which , if any nation declares a state of war with Palau, the country will be protected by U.S.

6) Andorra

Andorra Location


Although Andorra did not have a properly aligned and constituted military, they were daring enough to make attacks on Germany in 1914, joining the Great War. Quite inevitably the small army of merely 10 men was not taken as a threat and hence they were ruled out of the war. 

In the events that followed , this constitution of a small army was turned into Andorran National Police. This was a group of 240 men who took care of the civil peace. Anyone who owned a firearm was deliberately made a part of this Police Force.

Then who protects Andorra?


Andorra have three major protectorates which include France and Spain as inevitable from its location on the map. They help Andorra because of its landlocked location. NATO forces would also provide necessary assistance if required.

5) Grenada


Americans had invaded Grenada because of a military defeat and power struggle within its constitution, leading to the execution of Maurice Bishop who was the Prime Minister. This turned Grenada into a democratic state, leading to an expulsion of the army which could not be recovered till date.

The country relies on its Royal Grenada Police Force.


Then who protects Grenada?


The irony is that Grenada cannot depend on developed or a strong military state. They can look for small assistance from states like Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and Barbados as these countries do not have a stable defence system to provide with much help.

4) Marshall Islands


Marshall Islands

This country is directly under the care of U.S according to the Compact of Free Association 1983. Countries under the same pact include Palua (as mentioned above) and Micronesia. According to this pact Marshal Islands are a sovereign nation and stand as an associated state to the U.S, who is to take care of its defence.


3) Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein decided to abolish its military , after the Austro-Prussian war. Reason being that it was becoming unaffordable for the country to manage. It was under German Confederation before but seclusion , the funding could not full fill the expenditure. 

There is a police unit with the name of Principality of Liechtenstein National Police to carry out police duties.

Then who guards Liechtenstein?


Although there have been rumours about Switzerland being the protectorate of the country but neither of the nations have given any word on this. Other then Switzerland, Liechtenstein does not have any foundation of support from any country.


2) Nauru

You might not be aware of this fact but spread over an area of just 8.1 sq miles , Nauru is the smallest island country over the globe. It lacks capital to establish a decent army for an island as small as this, so it also relies on its Nauru Police Force which ensures maintaining peace and stability.

Then who guards Nauru?


Nauru was attacked back in December 1940 , when Australian army was called upon for help. It is quite understood that due to a close contact with Australia, in case of any war or invasion , Australia is likely to supply with armed and materialistic assistance.

1) Vatican City



Also known as the smallest country in the world, Vatican City does not have a standing army of its own. Pontifical Swiss Guard, a militaristic force, shelters the Pope and the Palace of Vatican. 

Another group with the name of Gendarmerie Corps, maintains the law and order, civilian duties and investigate the unwanted criminal activities.

Due to its location in Rome , it is fully supported and militarily financed by Italy who owns a large amount of capital and a huge army in number. They have an armed force of about 186, 798 men and women. They also provide protection from the Air Force.
