3 Privacy Settings to Tweak Before Facebook Graph Search Rolls Out

Facebook Graph Search became subject to controversy soon after it was announced, creating its own web universe for shared content. It is actually indexing, all the data that has been shared by you over the years, for our friends and friends of friends.

So all of the profile updates that you've made (including everything) is now to become data in a database of the social network's trillion connections between a billion users.

The graph search is already rolled out in beta version, available for a few hundreds of users right now but Facebook will use results from these users to help tweak the service, before it pushes it out to the whole of the Facebook community.

As mentioned earlier that Facebook will index the already existing data for your friends and friends of friends, so you can pretty much be satisfied and clear about the fact that no new data will be added and the general public won't have access to the data such as the college you attended or the movie you watched on a particular night.

However, if you want to keep such data away from your friends of friends, then you need to tune some of your privacy settings before the Facebook reveals the graph search feature to the entire Facebook community. Lets look at what you need to do.

Limit Your Self On Search

To avoid your friends of friends looking into you on the search, follow the steps below:

Step # 1: Click on the lock icon, besides Home, on the top right corner of your profile.

Step # 2: Go to more settings.

Filter Your Activity Log

Apart from the visibility on search, you need to study through the activity log to check all the posts that you have been tagged in or the locations you checked in before. This is a gradual process and will obviously consume fairly comprehensive amount of time. To remove the tags that you don't want to appear, follow the steps below:

Step # 1: Go to your profile.

Step # 2: Click on the Activity Log button below your cover photo.

Step # 3: From the column on the left, choose "Posts you're tagged in".

Step # 4: Now click on the icon representing two people's head located to the right of every post.

Step # 5: From the drop down menu that appears, choose Report/Remove Tag.

Step # 6: Select "I want this photo removed from Facebook." After you click continue, a request of removal  will be messaged to the person who posted that particular photo or item.

Limit Your Old Posts

Finally you need to set limit on your old posts as well. Your future posts are automatically limited to just friends, but the same settings might not be applied to the past posts too. So to put your friends of friends out of the limit bound you need to follow the following simple steps.

Step # 1: Click on the settings button on the top right corner of your profile and choose privacy settings.

Step # 2: Click Limit Past Posts next to "Limit the audience for old posts on your timeline."

Step # 3: Click Limit Old Posts. Note, this step cannot be easily undone, per a warning pop-up.
