If there is anything that is climbing the ladder of eternity apart from the petrol prices, it has to be the advancing technology beyond a reasonable doubt. These updates on technology are inevitable. Scientists from all over the world are working even harder to make innovative inventions every year.

But have you ever thought about the misconceptions that the technology has brought along for the past few years? No ?

Here is a list of 10 most popular misconceptions about technology. Have a look at it.

1) Using Cellphones at Gas Stations can blow you up?

10 Common Misconception About Technology

The very first thing that you might notice on a gas station is this hazard sign shown in the figure above. What does it say? Using a cell phone in a gas station might blow the station off. How legit does that sound?

This misconception was first spread by Shell Inc. They E-mailed people warning them about the dangers of using cellphones and how it can cause fatal damage. However, in the million gas stations worldwide, never ever such an incident took place where using a cell phone blew everything up.

You might have seen that MythBusters episode where they technically prove that no harm that is actually caused by using cell phones at a gas station. However, we still have that danger sign at gas stations although this point has been technically declared just a myth.

2) Charles Lindbergh was the first to fly across the Atlantic Ocean

Between May 8 and May 31, 1919, the crew of Navy-Curtiss NC-4 flying boat flew across the Atlantic Ocean. The saying that it was Charles Lindbergh who did that is nothing but a myth. Charles Lindbergh

no doubt did flew across the Atlantic but his achievement was that he made it across solo. He wasn’t just the first one to do such a thing

3) The US Highway was designed to allow Aircraft Emergency Landings

Number 2 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

A highway with about five miles of straight path is considered to be aircraft friendly as it can allow emergency landings. The US Interstate Highway System somehow fulfills the criteria but it wasn’t built keeping this in mind. It is a common misconception and we often see in movies how they easily land on the US highway as it is said to be made for it, however the designers didn’t take that into account and the road isn’t fully capable of supporting an aircraft landing.

4) The Printing Press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg

Number 3 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

The concept of Printing press or movably type had been introduced in China and Korea centuries before it came to Europe. Johannes Gutenberg introduced the concept in Europe and hence was declared as the inventor of Printing press. Gutenberg was the one who introduced it in Europe, from where it spread across the world, although it had been in use since many centuries before that.

5) Browser Cookies are potentially dangerous

Nmber 5 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

The cookies that the web browsers save on your computer are declared to be harmful by many computer experts. Even many renowned antiviruses don’t allow certain websites to save cookies on your computer. However, they aren’t really dangerous.

The purpose of cookies is to save the configurations about a website in plain text format. That plain text, can by no means be considered a virus like most people treat them as. There’s no way of executing such codes and they are just used for reference and unless there is a technical problem with your browser, it is perfectly safe to save cookies in your computer.

6) Macs are virus proof

Number 6 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

The UNIX platform, which is the base of Mac OSes, is designed in a way so as to not allow a security breach in the critical portions of the computer. It just won’t allow a user program to actualy harm the computer. However this nowhere specifies that UNIX based systems don’t get viruses, as believed by many computer analysts.

Macs DO get viruses. Although there aren’t much viruses for them as compared with Windows but they just aren’t virus proof.

7) The Autobahn was created by Hitler

Number 7 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

The German Autobahn network which found its extensive use by the German Armies in the World War II was not presented and modeled by Hitler, as books say. The Autobahn (a highway large enough to support aircraft landings) was first created by the Mayor of Cologne, Konrad Adanauer in 1931. Hitler became the chancellor in 1933 and the Autobahn project was already accomplished when he came.

8) The first Video game was Pong

Number 8 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

Pong was an arcade style game which can generally be described as a virtual tennis game. It was the first successful computer game and was also believed to be the first game ever built. This misconception would be because it the first game that actually got a lot famous among people and for people who had not come across any computer game, Pong was the first ever developed.

However, twenty years earlier a computer game for the EDSAC computer was released titled OXO, which was basically a tic-tac-toe game. This sixty years old game was the first to be built on the Computer platform but just because it didn’t get much famous, a lot of people never came to know about that. But declaring Pong as the first video game is just not right.

9) Web is the Internet

Number 9 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

‘Web’ and the ‘Internet’ are by far the most confusing terms in computer industry and only a few people can actually differentiate between the two. Just because the Internet Explorers are called ‘Web Browsers’ doesn’t specify that there is no specific difference between Web and Internet. They are technically two different concepts.

The Web or the World Wide Web is a system made of servers that host the pages and clients that view those pages. Web was first invented by Tim Berners Lee in 1989. However, Internet is the system of Interconnected networks used for communications and was first brought into existence in 1983.

Without the Internet, or the Interconnected Network, there is no application of web, since the connection between clients and servers is established through this internet. However, the vice versa is allowed. Many services like BitTorrent, newsgroups and instant messaging programs don’t have anything to do with web majorly. So the next time you come across these two terms, well, don’t mislead others.

10) Aircrafts dump the toilet waste in the air

Number 10 at 10 Common Misconception About Technology

When you get to know that aircrafts have the support for washrooms, the first thing that comes to your mind about the toilet waste is their disposal and then you easily believe that air is what they pollute. However, they aren’t that environment unfriendly.

The waste is stored in certain containers located inside the aircraft and is taken care of when it gets to the ground. There is a proper mechanism for the disposal and no, they don’t just shoot it in the air!
