We have examples of people so much influential that the whole human nation was restructured because of them. Whatever features or qualities they possessed were enough to change the way of thinking of millions and it actually did. However, they are certain influential people who have changed a lot of things today but never really existed.

Daedalus and Icarus were fictional characters who introduced the concept of flying for human beings. It is they who indirectly gave birth to the airplanes. However, as believed by many to be actually existent, they are just a Greek myth. According to stories, the father of Icarus, Daedalus build mechanical wings for his son which enabled him to fly in the air.

Uncle Sam (U.S) is no real man but a symbolization of the United States which was created by the American Soldiers in the war of 1812 in which they would receive meat packets labelled ‘Samuel Wilson from Troy’. So the ‘Sam’ comes from ‘Samuel’ and ‘Uncle’ was just added up by the soldiers. Uncle Sam was then identified as the powerful government of US.

The Marlboro man campaign was launched to convince men to smoke filtered cigarettes. In the advertisements, this Marlboro man is shown to be smoking filtered cigarettes and also living the ideal American life but there was no such person that existed, this was just a made up story. Someone who tries to be like him will soon dye of lung cancer and no, there was never this invincible Marlboro Man.
The Barbie, which is a fictional character in its roots, is featured in multiple English movies, and is a source of inspiration and a role model for major teenage girls. There is no real Barbie that ever existed. Barbie is among the top characters who have influenced girls the most and was invented by Ruth Handler in 1959.

So that old man who comes and gives presents to kids on Christmas exists? That is what people used to believe until they grew up. But if we track back this man to see who the actual Santa was, we’ll get to no one because there was never a real concept behind this Santa man. There is also no concept of the Santa in Christianity.

These two characters changed the definition of love for many however, the credit goes to Shakespeare’s mind and not some actually existent couple.

Sherlock Holmes is a detective by profession and no, he is not like the ‘normal’ detectives. Sherlock Holmes, as shown in various movies and novels, was such a professional who had the ability to solve the most complex mysteries is minutes. His amazing senses would make him identify a criminal by the shirt he’s wearing (seriously :p). However, in just fiction such things happen. Sherlock can however be linked to Dr. Joseph Bell who also had amazing observational skills.

‘Big Brother is Watching You’. Yup, that is the concept behind the big brother who is believed to be ever watchful. Whenever a privacy concern rises, people use this name of Big Brother in the protests. Big Brother does not really has a real history though, he was introduced in George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
