When it comes to online video hosting, the first name that comes into your mind is without any doubts YouTube. YouTube definitely is the largest such platform with over 800 million unique visitors every month. The vast database of YouTube contains almost everything you’re probably looking for and other video hosting websites like Vimeo are Metacafe are kind of ruled out.
But the number of visitors or users is not necessarily something that can differentiate between two different such platforms. Technically it should, but owing to the fact that we have some brainless maniacs on YouTube, it certainly isn’t the most efficient video hosting platform.
Vimeo is a similar video hosting platform that came into existence about three months before YouTube. Although Vimeo’s audience is not that large as compared to YouTube or other video hosting platforms but it still is actually a lot better than those. Vimeo also has certain features that make it preferable over YouTube, apparently the best in the business.
Lets have detailed look into it.
A Compact & Professional Community
Numerous times there come situations when you need to download a specific video off the internet. In case, of YouTube, it sure is possible but the methodology is not that simple. You have to go for third party downloaders and they get you the video. This can be time consuming and irritating at all times.
As for Vimeo, video downloading is provided as a feature with every video. Just below the video, you see a ‘Download’ button that makes you easily grab the video any quality you desire.
A Better Layout
YouTube’s layout is no doubt good in many aspects and gives a formal and professional look but Vimeo’s is still more user friendly and interactive. Moreover, it is simpler to look at, and easy to use. Unlike the intense layout of YouTube, Vimeo’s is cleaner and more designed.
Less Unwanted Crap
Over 70 hours of videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute. No this isn’t because every minute, important events of a total of 70 hours happen in this world and are to be shared with everyone on YT but because there are so much maniacs on YouTube uploading pointless videos. Getting the video you need within the unwanted crap is also a nightmare.
The less user community of Vimeo serves as a blessing in disguise since there is not much crap uploaded here. The videos uploaded are proper and not just with the purpose of wasting other people’s time.
You don’t every video you upload to be viewed by everyone who tries to. Vimeo offers a password protection option with your videos so that only a specific group of people whom you have given the password to, can actually view the video where others cannot.
YouTube also started the ‘Private Video’ feature but that makes the video completely private i.e. the only person who can view the video is the uploader himself/herself and if someone else wants to view that video he/she will have to obtain your account information so as to access that video. Vimeo has a perfect solution for this, since it also makes the video to only you and also to a specific group of people you share the video password with.
No Advertisement Campaign
If you’re a frequent user of YouTube, you will know how irritating is that advertisement that runs before certain videos and you do nothing but wait till it ends and the video is open to you. That advertisement is a part of the advertisement campaigns run by companies but is real irritating for people like us.
Vimeo just does not allow such campaigns and no ads run on any video. As soon as you open up the video, it starts playing unlike the YouTube experience which makes you wait for about thirty seconds until the advertisement is complete.
