WordPress Sites are under Attack and they Need to be protected!

WordPress is a CMS that is most widely used on the internet. Millions of sites are based on it. This CMS is open source and is mostly based on PHP. WordPress is considered as a secure system but still there are some flaws due to which it gets attacked by hackers.

WordPress Sites are under Attack!

Due to regular updates the risk of getting hacked is decreased but it doesn't vanish. The risk increases when the flaws left in WordPress are combined with the brute-force attacks.
These flaws in WordPress must be considered by developers and the people who host WordPress sites. Precautions should be used while installing WordPress. It is better to use precautions because once a WordPress site gets attacked it becomes very difficult to recover it and you may also lose some data.

Third Party WordPress Plugins

The hackers usually affect third party WordPress plugins that do not have resistance to use them for their evil purposes. In April 2013 these plugins were affected on such a large scale that it got noticed. After that the developers of these plugins updated them to make them secure.

Third Party WordPress PluginsThe flaws in the code of WordPress plugins can cause the execution of some harmful code that is written by the attacker. You should make sure that the plugins you are using are affected and you should also delete unwanted plugins to get secure. Another thing that you can do to protect your site is to keep the plugins updated. Updates usually remove the vulnerabilities.

Some organizations hire developers to update their plugins rather than using automatic updates. Although this is a difficult task and it cannot be done regularly but still it is a better way.

Brute-Force Attack

There was a huge attack on the WordPress sites in April 2013. Thousands of servers were used to identify WordPress sites and then it was tried to gain access to them with the help of the most common passwords that admin use.

Brute-Force Attack

The websites that had simple passwords on their admin account were easily hacked. The passwords containing only letters or only numbers are considered simple because hackers can easily get into websites having such type of passwords. Once the attacker gets access of a website he installs a backdoor to avoid any trouble in the future.

The hacked websites are then sued for illegal purposes like hacking more websites or distributing illegal content. Strong passwords should be used to protect against such attacks. Long passwords containing special characters are considered strong and they play an important role in protecting the website. Moreover the name of the administrator's account should not be "admin" because attackers usually consider "admin" user name for hacking.

Number of Incorrect Login Attempts

As WordPress doesn't count the number of incorrect attempts to log into a website, the brute-force attack becomes easy. The attackers keep on trying different passwords and are able to gain access to websites having user name "admin" and an easy password.

Incorrect Login Attempt

Some plugins are available on the internet to limit the number of incorrect login attempts. But the problem is that plugins further increase the risk. The attackers may use them to gain access to the website.

Something should be done to make the admin login area secure. wp-config.php should be secured and the editing of files should be disabled.
