Google Introduces New Gmail Tabs: How To Use Them?

Apart from innovating ideas for new products, Google has also been working persistently on many of the existing ones. Gmail is a perfect example which has faced frequent changes in interface and navigation during the recent years, and now Gmail inbox has changed yet again.

Organizing the email inbox and and keeping it least effected by spams is what the focus of progress has been. This time Google has introduced new tabs which enable to categorize your emails into different sections so that the entire look of the inbox is more approachable. Each section is called a tab

The figure below shows a screenshot taken from my Gmail inbox. You can see three different tabs at the top. The Primary tab - marked 1, Social tab - marked 2 and the Promotions tab - marked 3.

What Do These Tabs Contain?

Each of the different tabs compile in itself, a specific genre of emails that correspond to the name of the tab. For instance the Social tab will contain emails coming from social networks, online data services, media sharing websites and gaming platforms.

The Primary tab will have emails and messages coming from friends, family and other messages that don't originate from a social or any other website.

The Promotions tab on the other hand will contain all those spam offers and promotional deals and emails that you are normally sick of seeing on your routine inbox.

Can You Increase These Tabs? How?

Yes you can. Its simple and easy. Apart from the three default tabs, Primary, Social and Promotions, there is an easy way to add your custom tabs.

For this you need to click on the '+' sign to the extreme right of your tabs. This is shown in the figure below.

Upon clicking this, a pop-up menu will appear on your screen, as you can see in the figure below.

From this pop-up menu, you can check and uncheck the kind of tabs you want. As you can see, apart from the three default tabs, you can create two more with the name of Updates and Forums

Move Emails to Different Tabs

This is an even simpler process. All it takes to divert your email from one tab to another is a right click on the sender, choose 'Move to tab' from the options and send it to the tab that you want that email in. Gmail will automatically send the next email from the same sender into the new tab you chose for the its last email.

Alternatively, you can drag and drop messages to another tab.

Gmail has been subject to some user friendly improvements in the last few months and the ease of navigation has proven to be more smooth then Microsoft Outlook and Hotmail. What do you prefer ? Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo ? Don't forget to leave your valuable feedback on comments.
